Homophobia (from Greek homós: one and the same; phóbos: fear, phobia)
is an irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality, homosexuals, or individuals perceived as homosexual.
Psychologist and gay activist George Weinberg coined the term homophobia in his 1972 book Society and the Healthy Homosexual.
Weinberg's term became an important tool for gay and lesbian activists, advocates, and their allies.  He describes the concept as a medical phobia:

It's upsetting that homophobia still lives.

Homophobia is the hatred or fear of homosexuals and at times, is leading to acts of violence and expressions of hostility. Homophobia is not limited to any one segment of society, and can be found in people from all walks of life. Organized hate groups have inhumanly attacked homosexuals and have used especially violent language in attempting to harass and intimidate them.

Homophobia is a range of negative attitudes, and feelings towards homosexuality.  Antigay attitudes are best understood as an irrational fear and that they represent a form of individual psychopathology rather than a socially reinforced prejudice.
